SCP Copy Client

OK so most of our functionality is working and no new drivers have been required despite running with the system for several days. Next problem encountered surrounds use of SCP protocol to copy files around between our laptop and business server systems.

Examined a number of offerings in the Linux based client arena and none of these seemed to match up to the functionality of WinSCP an excellent windows based product.

Attempted to get the program working on Wine within Linux and initially this didn't work. Great news however, having set the executable to be run under Windows 98 within Wine the client works like a dream. This is set using the Applications tab of the Wine configuration program - another big success.

Sound working - sort of

After a bit of googling today, came up with a work around to the microphone sound issue. It appears that it does work, but once Skype is launched, it causes it's volume to drop away after the first call is made. Don't ask me why...

Anyway, you can use the following to manually monitor and change the status of your input between calls...

alsamixer -V capture

First Install

OK Folks, this blog documents our attempt to install and work with Fedora Core 6 on a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop.

If you find this blog useful, we have only one favour to ask. See the section in the top right of this blog...

Installation

From first install the machine recognized the vast majority of the hardware, we had to select generic LCD as the display in order to get a resonable range of resolutions. Currently working with a comfortable 1280 x 960, but it's possible to set this higher.

Setup yum according to instructions at fedorafaq, and carried out a full system update without problems (as of today 11th March 07)

Graphical installation worked like a dream, almost all items working by default once booted. We are using NVidea Graphics, not the standard card. Things that gave us grief / aren't working are listed below.

  • Microphone

Not working, major pain for us this, as Skype can't be used. Installed FC5 version of skype and this appears to work, but of course no outgoing sound. Please contact us if you are able to provide any help on this front.

  • Wireless Network NIC
Not working by default, there are a number of solutions to this on the web, some of which didn't work for us. The working combination came when we installed the following RPM's from freshrpms and the Dell website

dkms-2.0.16-1.noarch.rpm
dkms-ipw3945-1.2.0-1.noarch.rpm
ipw3945d-1.7.22-4.i386.rpm
ipw3945-firmware-1.13-1.noarch.rpm

Simply installed these, with rpm -Uvh resolving any dependancies. This provided the wireless card listing required within the graphical network setup and we were able to configure as normal from there - sweet.

Note there are many more complex methods of doing this around on other websites, I'd advise avoiding these and trying ours, contact us if it doesn't work for you and we'll help you if we can.

  • Modem
Untested, but who cares these days?
